The Rockstar of Herbs

Okay... okay before I get going I know how some of you feel. You hate it. It's overpowering. You can't get away from its taste....but I can't help but to love it. Did you know it's been recorded that this herb was in the hanging gardens of Babylon? That is one serious herb. It is a great source of vitamin K and A and in Arabian Nights it's referred to as an aphrodisiac.

Beyond that and to the real deal. I think I may be addicted to it. I love its piquant flavor (piquant is a new word for me: having an agreeably pungent taste) and its ability to enhance any dish. Do you love fresh salsa? I bet it's because of this beautiful thing. Cilantro.

Love it or hate it, can you describe it with one word? Try.

  1. Cafe Rio's Creamy Tomatillo Dressing. But I guess that is five words... But it's so yummy and I of course love cilantro! And I didn't know it was an aphrodisiac---I guess Brian will be taking me to Cafe Rio a lot more now!

  2. Impossible-to-find-in-Italy. Since multiple-word adjectives are hyphenated, does that make this one word? (probably not)

I miss cilantro! We tried to find some here but I swear it doesn't exist. When I get home, I will definitely be making salsa, with lots and lots of cilantro.

  3. Moderation... :) it's good but it can take away from all the other flavors (I had a fish with mango/cilantro chutney on it and I couldn't even taste the mango! Sad day) I sound like a foodie, this is great.

  4. Classic. Cilantro compliments so many dishes, it's amazing! I like the taste, but not the texture, so I prefer it ground up. I take it out of dishes when it's just sitting on top (like cafe rio salads) because the stem is too bitter and stringy for me to enjoy.

  5. Okay, I clearly need to go to Cafe Rio when I get out west this summer. Charisse, I was actually reading up on it (cilantro) and come to find out the stems are eaten as a vegetable in Asia. I don't think I am a fan of that. All I can think of is my grandma Schaffer insisting that I try her boiled dandelion greens. Not a fond memory. To Katie, moderation is always a good thing. So sad you couldn't taste the mango. Elizabeth have you discovered any Tuscan herbs we can't get here?

  7. I don't have one word. But did you know you can freeze it and then pull it out and stick it in your salsa, salad, or whatever? It's true. You can. So I guess my word is freezable...who knew?

  8. Shannon, miss you back! With all your FL roots I bet you like cilantro on fish. Yum. Cami Lou, I did know that---it is the only way I survive the harsh winter months!! Good word. Freezable.

  9. Yuck! One word :) Sorry, but I really don't like it. Really picky when it comes to food and flavours.
