My Blog's Roots

I love beautiful things.

Merriam-Webster defines beauty as: The quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.

Some things I find beautiful:
*Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto
*The smell and taste of homemade rolls
*Van Gogh's Roses and Anemones
*Givenchy's Hot Couture perfume
*My daughter's hearty laugh

*A photo I took of a moment in Venice

Each post will feature something I find beautiful. They will mostly focus on the things of right-sided part of my brain--I think a scan of my brain might show that only a very small portion is actually on the left side! :)

Post a comment and give me your top 3 beautiful things...need ideas?
A recipe, a song, a place you visited, a scent, an article of clothing or accessory...

  3. My top three probably change depending on the season, but these days I would say:
    - the feeling of air & earth when the sun is just about to rise in the morning
    - catching fireflies with my daughter on a summer night
    - yiruma's "river flows in you"

you know me — i love beautiful things, so naturally, i love this idea :)

  4. Andrea, I totally know that song...it's funny all these Belgian kids were talking about it, or my piano students were begging to learn it, and then I "got" why everyone was so into it. Sophia was bummed because there were none out tonight. Perhaps tomorrow. I thought you would like the idea....miss you!

  5. I love this idea for a blog. Well today I'd have to say the most beautiful thing was when James went to bed---he was such a crab today!
But in all seriousness, my top three would be:
-the day James was born and holding him as a precious newborn
-the drive on I-88 as you enter the Schoharie Valley (of course in the Fall)
-And music (I like too much to pick just one, but here are a few) John Rutter's A Gaelic Blessing, MoTab's This is the Christ, Debussy's Arabesque #1

  6. Hey Chris---a kid going to bed is indeed a beautiful thing!! Love Rutter's stuff...and I-88 of course! I am loving hearing people's picks. Are you coming to visit anytime soon?

  7. I love that you have a blog!!

It's hard to limit my list to three, but here goes:

    1) The smell of grass and trees on a warm summer day when it has just rained.
    2) Yann Tiersen's Comptine d'un autre été. I just love listening to it! Pure beauty.
    3) And this might be a bit strange, but after you've been jogging or went to the gym and you're sweaty and tired and look as red as a tomato, but you just feel great about yourself! There's just something beautiful that. :)

  8. What a fantastic idea! It is so hard to just choose three because I want to live my life appreciating and seeing beauty every day..:0)
    1) the big clear blue sky, especially when I have seen grey skies for so long. The sky in Cypress Hills Saskatchewan is breath-taking.
    2) When Mackenzie was born by c-section and was away from me for 4 hours while I was in the recovery room (stupid spinal block). When I finally got to my room and the nurse said ,"Bring this Mom her new baby". Saying "hello" to A sleepy Mackenzie struggled to open her eyes and we looked at each other for the first time. That was the most beautiful moment of my life.
    3) I love watching kids have fun making music... Loving their smiles at a terrific performance (their own or someone else's). Listening to a family concert at the elementary school a year ago and clarissa played "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas" on the harp. One of the grade one students looked up at me and said with wonder, "That music made my eyes cry". That was beautiful.

  9. Tatiana- I totally understand your sweaty workout choice. It really is an inspiring thing! Janelle....I have to get to Saskatchewan one of these days (of course when you guys are back there) to see it for myself. "That music made my eyes cry" is perfect. Miss you Belgiques and Tatiana I will have to listen to Yann Tiersen's piece.

    1. that "clean" smell - clothes, pine sol, clorox...
    2. the green and brown of NY trees juxtaposed with the blue and clear of Lake George
    and
    3. a child sleeping (preferbaly a child I love haha...) especially after they've had a hard day and can finally relax.

  11. Ooh! Carrie, I love this new blog of yours!

Here are 3 that come to mind:
    1. the poppies that grow on the side of the roads and in fields everywhere in Italy
    2. Bollywood films!
    3. When your food looks delicious and then tastes even better than it looks.

Also I agree, you should look up some of Yann Tiersen's music. He is one of my favorite contemporary composers and he wrote the music for the French film Amelie!

  12. Charisse-
There is no specific order. I love the smell of Gain. I grew up with my mom using ERA and never knew that there were mucn better smelling detergents. I discovered it when one of my roommates did their laundry with it. Ahh.... Now to Liz, there were poppies everywhere in the Belgian fields...that bright red poppy color dotting the hillsides. Gorgeous. I know that Tiersen wrote the soundtrack for Amelie. I love the main theme. I actually just bought a book like two weeks ago with it in it. He reminds me a Satie in that piece.
